The Juilliard Schhool season and school year begins with the third annual Juilliard Fall Festival—a preview of the year ahead. Opening night, Wednesday, September 16 at 7:30 PM, in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, celebrates the 75th anniversary of Juilliard Dance, the 25th anniversary of Juilliard Jazz, and the centennial of Miles Davis’ birth. Directed by choreographer Jamar Roberts, the evening honors Davis, who studied classical trumpet at Juilliard before transforming jazz and music beyond.
Other highlights include: A collaboration with the Atlantic Festival, exploring the traditions and cultures that have shaped American music; the historical performance ensemble, Juilliard415, led by Rachel Podger, in a program featuring colorful and exuberant music written for Shakespeare’s plays after the Restoration; and an outdoor performance with artists responding in real time to creative prompts.
The Juilliard Orchestra, conducted by GRAMMY Award–winning composer Teddy Abrams, celebrates another iconic alum, Steve Reich, at 90. Expressive chamber works, intimate drama performances, and the range of vocal arts students will also be presented, along with a day of discussion on creative aging and a screening of the documentary VIVA VERDI! The closing night of music, dance and drama is directed by dancer/choreographer Caili Quan.
