Vocalist Miss Maybell and her band, The Jazz Age Artistes, appear on Sunday, September 22, at Birdland Theater with two sets, at 7 PM and 9:30 PM. The group is composed of Charlie Judkins on piano, Brian Nalepka (of the Manhattan Rhythm Kings and Crazy for You on Broadway) on bass, tuba and backing vocals, Andy Stein (a 2x Grammy Winner and founding member of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, as well as violinist on the “Prairie Home Companion” show with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks) on violin, Dan Levinson on clarinet and saxophone, Jay Rattman on clarinet and Miss Maybell on voice, washboard, banjo and guitar.
Playing from a large repertoire of early jazz and blues, the group will perform a mix of favorite vintage songs from the 1899s-1920s, including forgotten gems of the Ragtime and early Tin Pan Alley era, plus a healthy dose of obscurities from the early years of the day. The group will also unveil several rare pieces from their upcoming project of unrecorded historical songs taken directly from rare sheet music and the Library of Congress.
