Returning live to Birdland, on Monday, September 13 at 7 PM, Carolle J. Bufford will debut Poets & Pickers with Peter Calo—Carly Simon’s longtime guitarist—with a set of curated story songs.
The lyrics of these chosen songs have the ability to, according to Bufford, “make you laugh, break your heart, chill you to the bone, hurtle you through time and space or just make you relish in the beauty of the pictures their words paint.” The songs will transcend the genres they were slotted into whether Pop, Jazz, Country, Rock, Blues, or Broadway, stripping the tunes down to their barest essence and building them anew. The repertoire includes numbers by Randy Newman, Irving Berlin, Bobbie Gentry, Cole Porter, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Colin Meloy, Jason Isbell, Kander & Ebb and more.
Carole J. Bufford is the recipient of the Nightlife, Bistro, and BroadwayWorld Awards for Outstanding Vocalist, Carole She recently enjoyed a ten-month solo run at New York’s Birdland Jazz Club and a monthly residency at Feinstein’s/54 Below. She is the creator and star of multiple shows including Come Together and You Don’t Own Me. She currently tours with her solo shows as well as with symphonies all over the country.
Peter Calo is a prolific guitarist who has been recognized for his solo work, such as his chart-topping album Time Machine,. He has also worked with his contributions to television shows such as “Ray Donovan” and “The Affair.” He has also recorded with well-known artists across multiple genres, such as Carly Simon, Kris Kristofferson, Hall and Oates, Dionne Warwick, Queen Latifah, Willie Nelson, Andrea Bocelli, Jimmy Webb, Lesley Gore, Crash Test Dummies, Harvey Fierstein and more.
