Broadway’s Beloved Nick Cordero, 41, Has Died of Covid-19 Complications

NiteLife Exchange joins the many publications and individuals mourning the passing of Broadway star Nick Cordero. The much-beloved actor passed away at age 41 on Sunday morning, July 5, after a valiant three-month battle with COVID-19 and its aftermath. The death was reported on Instagram by his wife, Amanda Kloots. Kloots had been reporting regularly on the social platform to keep friends and fans informed of his condition during the duration of his illness.

In announcing the death, Kloots wrote: “God has another angel in heaven now. My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth.

I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere. My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light. He was everyone’s friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. He was an incredible actor and musician. He loved his family and loved being a father and husband. Elvis and I will miss him in everything we do, everyday.”

Cordero was diagnosed in late March with what was initially thought to be pneumonia but was soon revealed to be the novel coronavirus. in a 90-plus day stay in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, the actor was placed on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma, and subsequently suffered significant complications of the virus, including sepsis infection, mini-strokes, a leg amputation and the loss of more than 60 pounds. Had he survived he was hoping to receive a double-lung transplant.

Cordero received a 2014 Tony nomination and a Theatre World award for his tap-dancing turn in his breakout role of Cheech in Bullets Over Broadway. In 2016, he played Earl Hunterson, the husband to Jessie Mueller’s Jenna, in the hit Waitress. He then starred as Sonny A Bronx Tale the Musical. Previous credits for the Canadian-born Cordero include a Toronto production of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, Off-Broadway’s rock musical and both a national tour of and role on Broadway in Rock of Ages.

Cordero leaves behind Kloots, a fitness instructor and former Broadway dancer and their son, Elvis, born in June 2019.
