A Feast of Open Mics Awaits Those Itching to Perform

The open mic—a time-honored way for singers to perform, test material, keep vocal chords in shape, socialize with peers and so much more. There are quite a few regular sessions in Manhattan—enough to keep anyone busy, indeed. Unlike the informality of a piano bar, the open mic has a formal structure: participants sign up and then give their all, in turn.

Open mics are not only good for the performers, but their virtues ripple out. They benefit the cabaret community (and other performing communities), as well. Club owners should make no mistake, they they benefit too. They gain awareness of their establishments and the prospect of repeat business for more open mic sessions and beyond. In showing good will towards open mics, club owners not only demonstrate support for live performance, but acknowledge a good business practice.

The following list of open mics was compiled with the invaluable assistance of Barbara Malley, who suggests also Googling “open mics in NYC” for ideas. Malley adds, “Googling leads to lists and reviews of several, such as ‘the 15 best’ or the ‘best in a neighborhood’ or on ‘a particular night.’  Each one seems to attract different types of people.”
