The 30th New York Cabaret Convention, presented by the Mabel Mercer Foundation, got off to a roaring start last night, Monday, October 28. The mood was festive at the sold out Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall as Deborah Grace Winer hosted the evening, The Sunny Side Of The Street: Celebrating Dorothy Fields & Great Women Songwriters, who included Marilyn Bergman, Betty Comden, Carolyn Leigh, Mary Rodgers, Blossom Dearie and more. Music director and pianist Mark Hummel was joined by Jay Leonhart on bass and Ray Marchica on drums.

Performing in Act 1 were (in order of appearance), Linda Purl, Darius de Haas, La Tanya Hall, Tom Wopat, Karrin Allyson, Margo Seibert, Nicolas King, Christine Andreas, Stacy Sullivan, James Naughton and Debby Boone. Christine Andreas was surprised before her performance with the presentation of The Mabel Mercer Foundation’s Adela & Larry Elow Donald F. Smith Award. The same performers in different order populated Act II with the addition of Jay Leonhart in singer mode with “You Couldn’t Be Cuter,” written for the film Joy of Living (1938) by composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Dorothy Fields.

Tonight, Tuesday October 29, Frank Loesser: Heart and Soul, a tribute to that songwriter, will be cohosted by Cabaret Convention favorites and cabaret communty stalwarts, Andrea Marcovicci and Jeff Harnar.

The 30th New York Cabaret Convention continues at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, Broadway at 60th St, New York through Thursday October 31.

For the third year THE MABEL MERCER FOUNDATION offer a “Rush” ticket policy. According to artistic director KT Sullivan, “The Mabel Mercer Foundation is using this opportunity to provide students — and other performers and musicians — an affordable opportunity to enjoy the great popular songbook, both traditional and contemporary.” The discounted admissions will be made available only to those holding either a valid Student ID or a membership card from MAC (the Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs). Same-day Rush tickets will be sold ONLY at the box office, beginning at 10:00 AM on the date of each performance. Tickets must be purchased in person, and there is a limit of two tickets per valid Student ID or MAC Member Card. The offer is good for any remaining seats in the $100, $50, and $25 tiers of the theater, and each ticket is priced at $13.50: $10 for the ticket, plus a $3.50 JALC Facility Fee.
