British Actress Liz Robertson returns to New York to perform her new show “LERNER WITHOUT LOEWE” at Don’t Tell Mama, on Thursday, April 6th at 7:30pm. Her musical director is multi MAC Award winning Mark Janas.
Liz Robertson made her New York cabaret debut in November of 2015 at 54 Below in a show called “SONGS FROM MY TRUNK” which received great reviews , both here and in London. Her new show “LERNER WITHOUT LOEWE” premiered in London at the Jermyn Theatre in 2016 is a loving tribute to her husband, Alan Jay Lerner, who in 2018 will be celebrating his 100th birthday.
Liz met Alan Jay Lerner when she was cast in Cameron Mackintosh’s revival of ‘MY FAIR LADY”, in London and subsequently fell in love and got married. She was Lerner’s 8th and final wife when he died in 1986. He wrote “DANCE A LITTLE CLOSER” for her with Charles Strouse in 1983.
Liz Robertson appeared in many musicals in London, “SONG AND DANCE” “SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM”, “THE SOUND OF MUSIC”, “A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC”, “I LOVE MY WIFE”, “HAIRSPRAY”, “PHANTOM OF THE OPERA” and the sequal, “LOVE NEVER DIES.” She also appeared in “KERN COMES TO HOLLYWOOD”, which subsequently came to the United States. She toured all over the USA as Mrs. Anna in ‘THE KING AND I” with Rudolf Nureyev, plus many concerts both here and in London.
Alan Jay Lerner is known for his shows with partner Frederick Loewe, “MY FAIR LADY”, “BRIGADOON”, “PAINT YOUR WAGON”, “CAMELOT” and “GIGI”. But he did write with a lot of other composers, in motion pictures and on Broadway, Burton Lane, Kurt Weill, Leonard Bernstein, John Barry and Andre Previn and was working on a musical based on “MY MAN GODFREY” when he died.
Liz will be performing a wide variety of songs from this huge catalogue and it was hard to choose from these gems to keep the show from being six hours long.
