Tawanda Suessbrich-Joaquim—Winner of the Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition—Debuts at Birdland on Thursday, November 17

Following her debut album Smile on Resonance Records, LA-based vocalist Tawanda Suessbrich-Joaquim, makes her New York City debut at Birdland on Thursday, November 17 at 8:30 PM. Joining her are the members of the John DiMartino Trio, consisting of DiMartino on piano, Marco Panascia on bass, and Tim Horner on drums.

The show is part of the 26 year-old singer’s first East Coast tour in support of the October 28, 2022 release of her CD.

In June of 2021, Suessbrich-Joaquim tied for first place with Gabrielle Cavassa in the 9th Annual Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, held in Newark, New Jersey. (The competition was originally slated to be held in 2020 but delayed due to COVID, the winner of the 10th annual competition was also announced in 2021). Her performance — judged by a panel that included singers Carmen Lundy and Vanessa Rubin and bassist Christian McBride — was all the more impressive given that Suessbrich-Joaquim had performed her first full show just a year before.

She will appear as a musical guest at the forthcoming 11th “Sassy” Competition, as it has come to be known, on Sunday, November 20th, 2022 at 3:00 PM.
