Sally Darling Sings Beatrice Lillie on Sunday, April 22 and Sunday, April 29 at Don’t Tell Mama

She’s a 2016 MAC Hanson Award winner, a 2017 Bistro Award winner and a 2017 and 2018 MAC Award nominee. The winning Sally Darling debuts her new cabaret show, Sally Darling Sings Beatrice Lillie at Don’t Tell Mama on Sunday, April 22 at 6 PM and Sunday, April 29 at 4:30 PM with Music Director Matthew Martin Ward at the piano. According to Darling, “The show is about the songs she’s done, with one she WOULD have done––brilliantly. She was called ‘the funniest woman in the world,’ and Noël Coward said she was ‘one of the greatest stars of light entertainment the world has ever known.’ She was unique and inimitable, and I want her to be remembered and recognized!” And Darling was lucky enough to have seen Lillie’s one-woman show, An Evening With Beatrice Lillie.

Lillie entertained on radio and in television as well as theaters, movie houses, vaudeville palaces and supper clubs in her 50-year career. When she died at age 94 in 1989, The New York Times, calling Lillie a “comedienne and lovable eccentric,” published an extensive obituary, relating a seminal story about Lillie’s quick wit and agile mind. According to The Times, “One spring day, while she was serving tea to friends in her East End Avenue apartment in New York, a pigeon flew in the window and sat on the arm of a chair. Some of Miss Lillie’s guests were startled, but she merely looked at the bird and asked, ”Any messages?”
