Richard Holbrook Celebrates Alan Jay Lerner at Barnes and Noble and at Don’t Tell Mama

Four-time MAC Award nominee, Richard Holbrook is celebrating lyricist Alan Jay Lerner’s centenary this year with shows at Barnes and Noble, 150 East 86th Street in Manhattan and at Don’t Tell Mama. On Wednesday, September 12 from 7 PM – 8:30 PM at Barnes and Noble, Holbrook will host and perform, along with singer Shana Farr, and Darryl Kojak at the piano. They will be joined by musical theater historian Robert Kimball (author of The Complete Lyrics of Cole Porter), singer-actress Margot Moser (who was the last performer to play Eliza Doolittle on Broadway in the original Broadway run of My Fair Lady) and annotator Amy Asch, whose book (with Dominic McHugh) The Complete Lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner, will be discussed.

Richard Holbrook: It’s Time for a Love Song, The Lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner—A Centennial Tribute, will explore Lerner’s many love songs at Don’t Tell Mama on Mondays, September 24, October 1, October 8 and October 15, all at 7PM. The musical numbers range from loving, tender and compassionate ballads to more lively and uptempo humorous, witty and sophisticated melodies. Among the composers featured in this tribute who collaborated with Lerner are: Frederick Loewe, Kurt Weill, Burton Lane and Andre Previn. Holbrook will be accompanied by The Tom Nelson Trio: Tom Nelson, pianist/musical director; Dick Sarpola, bassist; and Peter Grant, drummer. 
 
In addition, Holbrook will be one of many cabaret artists performing on the final night of The 29th Annual New York Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention for The Mabel Mercer Foundation‘s musical tribute to Alan Jay Lerner. The presentation,The Night They Invented Champagne: The Lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner will be hosted by Jeff Harnar and Andrea Marcovicci. The program will be held in Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Friday, October 12 at 6:00 PM.
