Pangea Continues the East Village Tradition of Community-building this August

Throughout the year Pangea, the downtown alt-cabaret venue, carries on the East Village tradition of using music and art to build community.  Downtown stalwarts like Penny Arcade, Tammy Faye Starlite, Joey Arias, David Cale, Flotilla Debarge and Carol Lipnik call Pangea their second home as they introduce new shows. Pangea also nurtures talents such as Kim David Smith, Salty Brine, Rachelle Garniez, Matthew Dean Marsh and Joseph Keckler.

Throughout August, Pangea is showcasing the following:

Every Monday through August 27, experience a new film series (with $10 and up spaghetti dinners!), co-hosted and produced by American Montage’s Eric Marciano and TWEED’s Kevin Malony The Spaghetti Chronicles at Pangea offers little-seen and—in some cases—notorious downtown hits, including The TWEED Fractured Classicks series, as well as art-house works from Marciano. Mondays, August 13, 20, 27, all at 8pm. With $10 and up spaghetti dinners and $6 wine and happy hour prices all night. Cover is $5 cash-at-the-door.

Sylver Wallace in Keep Looking: Sylver Sings Sade the TWEED TheaterWorks protégée who specializes in disrupting theatrical and musical landscapes so that new art forms can freely grow. Sylver premieres her first-ever night of lesser-known Sade songs, which go well beyond the pop icon’s discography. Saturday, Augut 11, 7pm. Cover $20.

Funnyman Steve Hayes, in his new show In Briefs… Brief uses newspapers and newsreels as a basis for his show, which plays one night only.  Sunday, August 19, 7pm. Cover $20

The Chicago-based Tammy McCann continues to build her New York following with a run of a new shows every month: Thursday, August 30 with Here’s to the Crooners—Torme, Cole and Johnny Hartman, Thursday, September 27 with Tammy Sings the Masters and Friday, October 26 with Get Happy—Streisand and Garland, all at 7pm. Cover $25.

The new late-night lounge show, Jazz Bastards, plays the last Friday of the month starting August 31. The show blends touches of vaudeville and free-form jazz, with Big Apple Circus clown Glen Heroy, drummer Nick Parker and Aldo Perez on guitars and vocals. The show also features piano-experimentalist Matt Kanelos and Mad Jenny on clarinet. Fridays, August 31, September 28, October 26, November 30 and December 28, all at 9:30pm. Cover is $15

Into September, there’s Raven O with “The Return of Raven O,” a new show with Ben Allison on bass.  Thursdays, September 6, November 1 and December 6, all at 7pm. Cover $25.
