Vocalist Marie-Paule Franke appears on Saturday, July 11 at The Five Spot Jazz Café with her album release show, Through the Cracks the Light Is Born, with sets at 8 PM and 10 PM. Also featured are Dongfeng Liu – acoustic piano, Marcos Varela – bass, and Daniel Silva – drums.
The Belgium-based Franke studied jazz, singing and piano at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent and took masterclasses with Judy Niemack. She spent periods performing classical music, pop, rock and funk before settling on jazz where she counts Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln and Blossom Dearie among her influences. Her earlier recordings include Tales From A Lonely Room, the EP All Is Love and Clouds; the latter contains nine of her compositions.
