Actor-singer John Lloyd Young brought his show, Songs From the Road, to 54 Below, delivering an evening filled with beautiful vocals, heartfelt interpretations, and beloved musical favorites. A gifted baritone with an impressive range and a rich, beautiful sound, Young demonstrated why he has captivated audiences on Broadway and in film.
He’s perhaps best-known for his Best Actor, Tony Award-winning performance for his role as Frankie Valli in the Broadway production and film adaptation of Jersey Boys. That connection was evident as he delighted the audience with songs from the show that helped make him a star.
For me, two of the evening’s highlights were Young’s moving renditions of the famous Italian song “Il Mondo” and “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from Les Misérables. He sang both with great feeling and emotional depth, bringing out the beauty of the melodies and the power of the lyrics.
Naturally, songs from Jersey Boys brought smiles to many faces throughout the room. The excitement reached its peak when Young performed “Working My Way Back to You” and “Sherry.” The audience was on its feet, singing along and enthusiastically joining in the celebration.
Providing instrumental support for Songs From the Road, was Musical Director Steve Marzullo, with Sean Harkness (guitar), Derek Nievergelt (bass) and Ray Marchica (drums).
