This is our regular weekly event, launched at the start of the current situation. This is a combination of what I happen to feel like showing (including many new acquisitions) and what anybody requests. I call it “mostly music” because I also occasionally include vintage comedy routines, classic short subjects and cartoons, almost anything anybody wants to see, including everybody from Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, and Tony Bennett to Tom Waits and Bob Dylan, Mahalia Jackson, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, James Brown, Dolly Parton, The Smothers Brothers, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Lauritz Melchior, Lily Pons, and Scratch the Wonder Crab! Special thanks to Steve Kramer, Anthony DiFlorio, & Burton Kittay.

About the Clip Joint / Broadway Mixtape series:

Each session tells the story of a classic show – its history and backstory, tracing its evolution from the origins (in the source material) up through the original Broadway production, subsequent revivals and film versions, as well as jazz and pop interpretations of these classic songs. All sessions feature a delightful mixture of great performances captured on vintage film and video, starting with original Broadway cast performances, popular singing legends like Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis, jazz giants like Erroll Garner and Louis Armstrong, as well as, occasionally the the composers and lyricists themselves.

Meeting ID: 911 2265 8162

NELSON RIDDLE (1921-1985) is widely regarded as the greatest orchestrator, arranger, and musical director in all of American Popular Music – a credit he deserves for his work with two of the greatest singers in all of the music, FRANK SINATRA & NAT KING COLE, alone. Over the course of a career that lasted from his early days in the big bands of Charlie Spivak and Tommy Dorsey to his academy-award winning years as the composer of scores for many major motion pictures, Riddle consistently represented the highest rung of what popular music was capable of.

This special presentation for THE AMERICAN POPULAR SONG SOCIETY focuses on Riddle’s achievements, illustrated with copious video clips featuring Riddle’s arrangements as performed by FRANK SINATRA, NAT KING COLE, JUDY GARLAND, ELLA FITZGERALD, PEGGY LEE and many others, including rare footage of Riddle himself conducting his classic charts.

The APSS meeting of Saturday will be divided into two sections:
12:00Noon EST to 2:00PM the main meeting, in which all the high points will be covered.
2:00PM to 4:00PM – after a brief break, there will be an extended meeting, featuring more classic clips and conversation, for anyone who wants to stay on.

Description

What made Frank Sinatra — aka Ol’ Blue Eyes, The Chairman of the Board, The Voice — tick? This is the story of how one seemingly ordinary Italian kid from Hoboken, New Jersey learned to craft his raw musical talent and demeanor to become one of the world’s greatest musical icons of his generation, and century.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the life and music of legendary singer and performer Frank Sinatra, and how his musicianship, unerring instinct, and New York chutzpah made him into one of the greatest musical figures of the 20th century.

Led by award-winning author Will Friedwald — who penned Sinatra! The Song Is You, considered the most essential book ever published on Sinatra — our virtual exploration of Frank Sinatra filled with copious visuals and iconic performances on video will include:

* The origin story of Frank Sinatra, from his upbringing as an only child of Italian immigrants in Hoboken, to how a nobody from New Jersey made himself into the most celebrated entertainer in show business, and the most famous man in the world — more than once
* The evolution of the Sinatra sound, from the big band of the war years to the lushly-romantic of later generations
* A discussion around Sinatra’s great colleagues and collaborators, including the legendary Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Gordon Jenkins, and others
* Behind-the-scenes stories of Sinatra in the recording studio, gleaned from the musicians themselves
* Rare classic video clips of Sinatra singing his essential signature songs, most of which cannot be found online

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Will — any and all questions about Frank Sinatra are welcomed and encouraged!

Each presentation features both familiar classics and oddball surprises, in every genre, and the majority of the material is not otherwise available via either youtube or home video.
