Debut of Raise the Roof Open Mic at The Duplex Exceeded Expectations

Darius Frowner

Darius Frowner, who’s been a popular pianist and host for Singer Spotlight at The Duplex Cabaret and Piano Bar announced several weeks ago a re-brand of the show, an all-new weekly open-mic, networking piano party. Last night, on September 16, Raise the Roof made its debut in a “secret location” in the club—the Jan Wallman Room—not the piano bar. The successful opener marks the continuation of the show every Thursday night at 10 PM until 1 AM or later. Raise The Roof is a singers’ open mic, with some all-sing hits and a place to network, covering a variety of genres. The Wallman Room is a re-designed space with baby grand piano, upgraded lighting and an atmospheric vibe of lux intimacy. The official grand opener is in October.

Of the first edition of Raise the Roof, Frowner posted in Facebook: “Our first open mic party exceeded everything I imagined. Ive always surrounded myself with great singers, and my skill is maximizing what they can do, and what can we all create together. So I’m not just going to say there was stellar singing, funny moments and emotional ones. What I though would be more important was to have a catharsis from all what we have been through, not seeing each other, not making music together then finally getting do to that… Thanks to the singers who met to rehearse special stuff to make this work. Thanks to the Duplex managerial team for trusting me with this idea, and to my army of loyal friends and singers (new ones too).”

Raise the Roof has no cover, but there is a 2-drink minimum. requests can be sent to pianomanyc@Venmo

The Duplex is located at the northeast corner of Christopher St. and Seventh Avenue South in Greenwich Village.
