Awards Season: Outer Critics Circle Will Not Declare Winners This Year

Because of the much-abbreviated Broadway and Off-Broadway theater season, the Outer Critics Circle has decided to simply honor productions in designated categories instead of naming winners this year. A statement on the organization’s web site reads: “In light of the current and unprecedented period of suspension for live arts across the nation, the Outer Critics Circle’s milestone 70th Anniversary will be dedicated to celebrating widespread excellence in New York theater this season.”

Up to six honorees were named for acting categories and up to five for technical categories. Those productions with the most mentions are Moulin Rouge! (11), Jagged Little Pill (8), The Sound Inside (7) and The Secret Life of Bees (7).

Additionally,  the John Gassner Award, presented to an American play, preferably by a new playwright, was awarded to Catya McMullen for Georgia Mertching Is Dead, Will Arbery for Heroes of the Fourth Turning, Alexis Scheer for Our Dear Dead Drug Lord and Eboni Booth for Paris.

Outer Critics Circle is the official organization of writers on the New York theater for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway.
