Based on the success of the inaugural week’s competition, the York Theater Company’s Songwriters in Mufti, helmed by York Literary Manager, Seth Christenfeld, continues this week with a new theme, Anything Can Happen in the Theater… and it Does! The theme is based on an Autumn 2019 show produced at the York, entitled Anything Can Happen in the Theater: The Musical World of Maury Yeston, a revue of songs by Tony-winning composer and lyricist Yeston.
Participants should send a recording of the song to songwritersinmufti@yorktheatre.org by 8:00 PM (EDT) on Friday, May 15th. Video recordings are preferred, but audio recordings will also be accepted. Submissions should be sent via Dropbox or similar service. Sheet music is not necessary. Week one songs are featured on the York’s Facbebook page, here.
As the theme indicates, the songs should be about the unexpected things that can happen in the theater—in performance, in rehearsals, in the house, on the TKTS line, or anywhere. According to Christenfeld, “whether you’ve been a writer, a performer, a musician, an audience member, or behind the scenes, we want to hear a song inspired by something surprising that happened (or could happen) in the business we call show. Even better if it’s something that happened at The York—because we know some strange things have happened here. To us, at least.”
