Update on the 2020 Tony Awards Broadcast

The 2020 Tony Awards were originally scheduled to take place at Radio City Music Hall on June 7, but when Broadway shut down in March 2020 and the pandemic ensued, the date was cancelled. Tony Awards organizers planned for a digital ceremony but that date shifted and then became a big question mark, which it still remains since the reopening of Broadway has been postponed again.

Now, Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, a producer of the awards with the American Theater Wing, said at the recent Theatermakers Summit that there is no decision yet to set a date for the virtual presentation. Many shows are eyeing a return in fall 2021, which St. Martin said gives the Tony presenters more time to create the digital ceremony.

St. Martin said the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing are working with CBS, the traditional broadcast partner of the Tony Awards, to plan what the ceremony will look like.

Nominations for the 2020 Tony Awards were announced Oct. 15. The nominating committee considered 18 productions from the 2019-2020 season, after setting an eligibility cut-off date of Feb. 19, 2020.
