The TV Junkie by Penny Landau ****Best Film Who should win its a toss-up between The Shape of Water and Get Out. Who will win Although Get Out is brilliant and is the little engine that could, The Shape of Water will take home the prize. Three Billboards aint gonna make it, no matter how hard those signs try to get our attention.
Best Actress Who should win Saoirse Ronan, because she is Lady Bird and Ive loved her since Brooklyn. Who will win Frances McDormand, because shes the best thing in this film, along with Sam Rockwell and the three billboards.
Best Actor Who should win Gary Oldman. Who will win Gary Oldman, since his portrayal of Winston Churchill is spot on. Hes often overlooked and underestimated for his talent, but in Darkest Hour, he gives a stunning performance and this statue is well-deserved.
Best Supporting Actress Who should win Laurie Metcalf, who is an amazing actress. She can go from Roseanne to Toy Story to The Big Bang Theory to Lady Bird, with a Tony Award, three Emmys and oodles of Jefferson Awards for her work with the prestigious Steppenwolf Company and then back to Roseanne, in one hell of a career. Get the feeling I REALLY love her? Who will win Allison Janney, whom I adore and who can do no wrong. Just watch Mom. Glad Im not making this choice!
Best Supporting Actor Who should win Sam Rockwell. Who will win Sam Rockwell, who has kicked around for years doing film after film and is finally basking in the glory of this role and rightfully so. Being the sci-fi geek that I am, you know his role as Guy in Galaxy Quest is my favorite. Hes the under-five actor who finally gets a name in the re-boot and thankfully, isnt wearing a red shirt.
Best Director Who should win Jordan Peele. Get Out is pretty damn great for a first big film. Who will win Guillermo del Toro, for the uniquely beautiful film that is The Shape of Water.
Best Original Screenplay Who should win Jordan Peele. Who will win Jordan Peele. Ok, full disclosure, I know Jordan from my work with TADA! Youth Theatre and hes one of the sweetest guys youll ever meet. Get Out is a scary, creepy, frightening film that had me shaking in my Sperrys. From Key & Peele and Keanu (hilarious!) to Get Out is a huge leap and one that will have him taking home an Oscar.
Best Adapted Screenplay Who should win Call Me by Your Name, for the sheer beauty and romance of this lovely gem of a film. Who will win Call Me by Your Name, because who doesnt love a love story.
“The TV Junkie was preceded in her family by a large mahogany cabinet that housed a small screen with a large speaker below. Thus began her love affair with the older sibling in the living room. Theirs was a tenuous relationship, prone to mishaps (forgetting to use the special screen for Winky Dink), joyous events (Julie & Carol at Carnegie Hall), sad moments (Clarabelle saying goodbye to the Peanut Gallery) and a wide range of emotions (the funeral of John F. Kennedy and the Inauguration of Barack Obama). From Captain Video to Star Trek to Lost; from A Brighter Day to The Edge of Night to General Hoapital; from Peyton Place to Dynasty to Desperate Housewives; there has never been a greater love, than that of The TVJ and the best friend a girl could ever have.
