With the COVID pandemic still ongoing, once again the annual awards presentation of the Manhattan Association of Cabarets (MAC) will be virtual, scheduled to stream on Thursday, May 13 from 7 PM to 8:30 PM EDT. According to MAC, this is an “Awards Celebration 35 Years in the Making—-like you’ve always and never known them.”
With the retirement of long-serving president, Lennie Watts, new president Amy Wolk has now taken the reigns of MAC leadership. Wolk and the MAC Board, which includes several new members, have thus taken on the challenge of a fresh look and new approach in celebrating 35 Years of MAC Awards. The virtual edition will feature live-on-film performances created for the show, plus tributes to the many members of the Cabaret Community who have continued to perform and thrive during the pandemic. The show will also highlight how the Community has been helping out during this time, as well as presenting general reflections on 35 years of MAC and MAC Awards history.
Scott Barbarino, a former MAC president and publisher of NiteLife Exchange, stated, “I’m impressed and inspired, not only by the new MAC leadership, but by the new direction MAC is taking in the cabaret community. The awards being bestowed and the show that’s being planned will bring a greater presence overall to the art form of cabaret and to the community that supports it.”
Part of that presence, of course, includes honorary awards and acceptance speeches. Those awards—newly reconceived—have just been announced and are:
JENIFER LEWIS—Lifetime Achievement Award
TOM D’ANGORA, MICHAEL D’ANGORA, TIM GUINEE—Board of Directors Award, for their work on the Cabaret Telethons
SETH RUDETSKY, JAMES WESLEY—Board of Directors Award, for their creation and hosting of Stars in the House
DAVE GOODSIDE—MAC Humanitarian Award, for his work feeding First Responders at The Beach Cafe
