Singer Tennie Leonard returns to Don’t Tell Mama to reprise her popular show, Here and Now, with three new dates, Tuesday, May 22nd, Wednesday May 30th and Thursday, June 7th. All shows are at 7:30 PM. Here and Now is directed by Scott Barnes, with musical direction by pianist Ian Herman and sound and lighting design by J-P Perreaux.
Growing up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Tennie sang before she talked. As a child, she appeared on “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour” as well as numerous children’s television shows. In high school, Tennie studied opera, but quickly turned to her true loves—Broadway musicals and pop standards. At 17, she co-wrote and recorded her first single, “Sincerely Yours,” for RCA/Decca. Other records, “Look at Me’ and “Poor Girl,” plus “Last Year’s Bikini (now on You Tube and part of Here and Now) also brought Leonard success. Marriage at an early age brought a daughter, Lauren. Tennie’s singing career then turned to cabaret and the nightclub circuit with nightly appearances at The Living Room. She also appeared on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” the “Merv Griffin Show” and others. Leonard appeared at Rita Dimitri’s La Chansonette, Bon Soir, Blue Angel and others in the NYC tri-state area.
Faced with tragedy that necessitated raising a small child alone, Tennie put aside her singing career and entered the business world, becoming an executive with a successful incentive marketing company in New York. Leonard re-entered the world of show business in California. She resumed singing in 1980, joining a repertory company and starring in leading roles in the company’s musicals for over a decade (also mentioned in the show). the 1990s, eventually releasing a CD, Leonard continued to build a cabaret career in the major rooms of New York City.
