Sunday: MAC Nominee Joshua Lance Dixon: The Pack Is Back

Reprising the show about The Rat Pack that celebrated his winning Don’t Tell Mama’s annual singing contest, Mama’s Next BIG Act!, initially presented by the club as part of his prize, vocalist-actor Joshua Lance Dixon is back with his Pack of One one-man show. Celebrating his second MAC nomination, he is offering a discount for his fellow MAC members: a $13 cover charge instead of the $20 or $25 prices.  Singing songs associated with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and their pals, Sunday’s show, is part of a busy March for the performer. He’s nominated again as outstanding male vocalist by MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) for the awards which take place on March 27.  Tomorrow (Saturday, March 10) he will be among those singing at the memorial for fellow cabaret artist Charlotte Patton.  And a revue he was in, It Helps to Sing About It, is getting a Bistro Award and he’s been asked to perform at the awards ceremony the day after his Pack of One Sunday [March 11— after Daylight Savings Time kicks in].  (His resume includes winning a Bistro Award for his own solo work, and he’s also picked up a BroadwayWorld.com cabaret award, too.)

But his Sunday afternoon Pack of One revisit is not just a one-off.  He’s become absorbed with the careers of these icons and their songs — including such memorable hits as the fun “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” the evergreen “Fly Me to the Moon” (“In Other Words”) and the touching character portrait of “Mr. Bojangles” — and plans a series of shows in the near future, each of which will focus mainly on one of the superstars.  He’ll explore not only their Vegas acts, but their film careers, and personal stories.  Comedian Joey Bishop and actor Peter Lawford, also Rat Packers, but not known so much for their musical sides, will be covered, too.

Sunday’s show is at 4:30 PM in Don’t Tell Mama’s cabaret room, 343 West 46 Street on Manhattan’s Restaurant Row.  Music director is Steven Ray Watkins (piano) and Matt Scharfglass is on bass.  Lennie Watts is the director.

Below are excerpts from his reviews:

“Sings with an intense focus and passion. Has presence, charm, movie star looks, a glorious voice and lots of talent.” — Cabaret Scenes

“His voice is a bright, attractive, resonant baritone. But even more important than that is the quality of his interpretations—no, not the quality, but more specifically, his approach to interpretation.” — BistroAwards.com

“His stage presence, vocal talent and interpretive artistry add up to star quality.” — NiteLifeExchange.com
