So You Want to Sing Cabaret, by David Sabella and Sue Matsuki, is the 20th and final book in the So You Want to Sing… series, sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and published by Rowman & Littlefield. The book explores all aspects of the relatively unknown and unique genre of vocal performance known as Cabaret. Richard Skipper Celebrates this special achievement with the authors and their book release video, on Friday, July 3rd at 8:00pm ET.
The video debuted at the NATS Conference on Friday, June 26th as a “Premiere Event.” Starring in this video, in full performances, are: Lorna Luft, Jeff Harnar, Natalie Douglas, Lennie Watts, Lina Koutrakos, Andrea Marcovicci, Steve Ross, Ann Hampton Callaway, KT Sullivan, Sidney Myer and Karen Mason with other notable special clips and live interviews being conducted by hosts Sabella and Matsuki. This cast is composed of many who were interviewed in the book. This video was described by a viewer as being like “An HBO Special,” so special thanks to Engineer Roger Lian for his incredible work.

David Sabella served as a two-term president of the New York Singing Teachers’ Association (NYSTA – 2008-2014) and an executive director of the Broadway Theatre Project (2013 – 2015). He has served on the voice faculties at Montclair State University, Fordham University, NYU/CAP21, New School Mannes Prep precollege program, and two SUNY Colleges (Purchase and New Paltz). Additionally, Sabella has been a faculty member/workshop presenter at the Voice Foundation’s annual symposium and has conducted masterclasses, faculty training workshops, and music theater pedagogy seminars throughout the contiguous United States, Alaska, and South America.
In addition to writing So You Want to Sing Cabaret Sabella was featured in So You Want to Sing CCM as one of twelve international pedagogues to have put forth a modern vocal technique for teaching contemporary commercial music.

As a performer, Sabella enjoys a long and varied career including a co-starring role in the 1996 Broadway revival of Chicago, network voiceover work for Disney and FOX TV, and both opera and oratorio performances throughout the US and abroad. Sue Matsuki is the managing partner, co-editor, reviewer, vloger and a columnist (Sue’s Views) for an on-line entertainment magazine: www.Cabaret Hotspot.com. She has taught Cabaret classes at The Ridgefield Theater Barn and UCONN in CT, MAC-to-School and Cabaret Hotspot in NY and for the Canadian School of Performing Arts. She has served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors for MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs). She, along with Gregory Toroian, her long time music director, now host a monthly Jazz Brunch Open Mic at Pangea. Matsuki also produces benefits and corporate events and is the producing manager for Urban Stages’ Winter Rhythms series, where she also hosts a Vlog called Urban Stages’ Artists Chat.
Matsuki’s most cherished awards come from winning the 2020 Bistro Award for Outstanding Collaboration celebrating her 25th year of working with music director, Gregory Toroian; getting her poster up on Don’t Tell Mama’s “Wall of Fame” for her show How’s That for Openers?, celebrating the 33rd Anniversary of singing at the club and being selected personally by the late Julie Wilson as the very first 2004 Julie Wilson Award Recipient, given by the Mabel Mercer Foundation. Matsuki is an 11-time MAC Award nominee and a 3-time winner (in seven different categories); mostly recently she was nominated for Major Female Vocalist. 2020 is marking Richard Skipper’s 41st year in New York. He is an entertainer, raconteur, arts advocate, theater historian and promotions/marketing guru. Under the guise of Richard Skipper Celebrates, he has conducted over 700 interviews celebrating people in the arts. Recent interviews have included Joyce Bulifant, Linda Purl, Don Most, Melissa Manchester, Lesley Ann Warren, Loretta Swit, Tippi Hedren, Rich Little, and David France, author of How To Survive A Plague, Patty Farmer, author of Starring the Plaza and Playboy Laughs. This past year he completed a very successful artist-in-residence at The Laurie Beechman Theatre in NYC where he presented a monthly talk/variety show produced by Russ Woolley. He closed the series to focus on his solo show. He opened this SOLD-OUT show, An Evening with Richard Skipper: From Conway to Broadway Off Broadway at St. Luke’s Theatre.
