In honor of Women’s Equality Day, Heidi Schreck and Rebecca Naomi Jones will host Playbill’s Women in Theatre: A Centennial Celebration concert, live-streaming on Wednesday, August 26 at 8 PM ET. The show offers sneak peeks at musicals like Jeanette and Gun & Powder and the debut of a new song by SIX co-writers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. The evening will also feature numerous performances by artists such as Tony nominee Sara Bareilles, singing from her musical Waitress, two-time Tony nominee Daphne-Rubin Vega, Tony winner Jessie Mueller and Tony winner Nikki M. James as well as appearances by Pulitzer Prize winners Quiara Alegría Hudes, Lynn Nottage, Paula Vogel and a host more.
The concert honors game-changing female-identifying artists over the past 100 years through personal and historical accounts of the influence of these artists as well as through musical performances. Both renowned and under-appreciated women, who made the theatre what it is today, will be featured and include directors, writers, composers, lyricists, designers, producers, performers and more.
Directed by Melissa Crespo, with musical direction by Victoria Theodore and with sound design by MP K, Women in Theatre also honors the Broadway Advocacy Coalition’s new Artivism Fellowship, which supports artist activists using their tools to have an impact on the world around them. The inaugural class of fellows will specifically support Black, female-identifying artist activists focused on issues related to systemic racism and criminal justice reform. The Fellowship will provide financial support, mentorship, networking opportunities, and education workshops.
Women in Theatre: A Centennial Celebration is produced by Ruthie Fierberg, Rachel Sussman, and Cynthia J. Tong on behalf of Playbill.
