Learn the craft of songwriting with industry greats Amanda McBroom and Michele Brourman, who’ve written hundreds of songs for themselves, others, theater and film. Class dates are Wednesdays, November 11, 18, December 2 and 9 (skipping Thanksgiving week Wednesday) at 5 pm ET(4 pm Central, 3 pm Mountain, 2 pm Pacific, 10 pm UK, 11 pm Europe). Class length is 1 1/2 hours per session and will be interactive. They also will be recorded so students can review classes at their leisure.
The series discusses how to use words effectively, how to support those words with melodic and harmonic choices, how to understand and use structure without being restricted by it and understanding the “rules”—and knowing how and when to break them. Other topics that will be addressed are:
• What is it we want to say in a song? And how can we say that in the simplest, most effective way?
• How do we drill down into our own emotions, find the right language to express it?
• How do we bring the “Creator” on board and get the “Critic” out of the way? And when do we invite the critic back into the room with us to hone whatever we’ve just written?
Student participation is limited, but the sessions may be audited.
