A brand new tribute show, Myriam Phiro: Becoming Marlene Dietrich, will play at Birdland Theater on Thursday, April 13 at 8.30 PM. Phiro will be accompanied by her long-tenured trio: Hyuna Park (piano), Elias Bailey (bass) and Alex Raderman (drums), plus guests.

The new show, about an icon often referred to as “Queen of the World,” focuses on Dietrich as a pioneer in asserting a woman’s right to control her image as well as defy social conventions of the 1930’s. She is recognized for denouncing fascism and embodying a uniquely enigmatic sex appeal. Perhaps most fascinating was her courage to demand the respect that women were denied in this time. By gaining the adoration of the American public in spite of challenging conventional moralities with her gender-bending roles, she became the epitome of glamor and a trendsetting style icon. Dietrich was featured in over 50 films and performed countless cabaret shows in a career lasting over 60 years.

Phiro is known for her renditions of Dietrich’s counterpart, Edith Piaf. The new show combines elements of Piaf and Dietrich’s time period and explores the rumored scandalous relationship between the two. She will convey some of the most dramatic moments of Dietrich’s life and legacy, while unveiling some of the diva’s mysteries.

Tickets are  $25-35 with a $20 minimum. Purchase here.
