Matthew Morrison brought Show Up to 54 Below, delivering an evening that showcased why he remains one of the entertainment industry’s true triple threats—a gifted singer, dancer and actor, who displayed his remarkable versatility while captivating the audience with effortless charm and stage presence. From the moment he stepped on stage, his charisma filled the room, prompting enthusiastic applause, cheers and audience sing-alongs throughout the evening.
Musical director Jodie Moore led an outstanding band that complemented Morrison perfectly throughout the evening. He was backed by guitarist Beth Callen, bassist Skyler Volpe and drummer Clint de Ganon. Callen and Volpe, in particular, provided excellent musical support, their playing blending beautifully with Morrison’s vocals, while de Ganon’s dynamic drumming gave the performance an energetic pulse.
Morrison opened with “Pure Imagination” (Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley), adding a touch of theatrical magic by making lights appear in his hand as he performed. He also demonstrated his musicianship by accompanying himself on the ukulele for a heartfelt rendition of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” (lyrics by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons), one of the evening’s most tender moments.
From Jekyll & Hyde, he delivered a stirring performance of “This Is the Moment” (Frank Wildhorn, Leslie Bricusse, Steve Cuden), filling the intimate room with Broadway-sized emotion. He then shared the personal story of rushing to his girlfriend’s home after hearing the devastating news of September 11, only to experience another emotional blow when he discovered she had been unfaithful. That poignant memory led seamlessly into an emotionally rich interpretation of Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns.”
The highlight of the evening came when Morrison revisited the Broadway songs that helped establish his career, particularly the energetic numbers from Hairspray, where his singing and dancing reminded the audience of his extraordinary stage abilities. Of course, no Matthew Morrison concert would be complete without a spirited Glee medley, celebrating the television series that introduced him to millions of fans around the world.
Morrison is an electrifying performer whose talent seems limitless. Even on the intimate stage of 54 Below, he commanded every inch, gliding effortlessly across the stage and leaving his devoted fans cheering for more. Show Up proved to be an evening of Broadway excellence, heartfelt storytelling, and pure entertainment.
