Kyoko Saegusa Returns to Don’t Tell Mama with “Desafinado,” Tuesday, April 30th

Kyoko Saegusa returns to Don’t Tell Mama to sing the music of the Antonio Carlos Jobim. Saegusa also celebrates over six years and 13 different themed shows at Don’t Tell Mama. Joining her on Tuesday, April 30th at 7pm are musical director and pianist Russ Kassoff, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Arnold Wise. She’ll perform Jobim classics, such as “Triste,” “Wave,” “Dreamer,” “Meditation,” “Dindi” and, of course “Desafinado” in English and Portuguese because “Portuguese culture is part of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s music.”

Saegusa, a native of Japan, has been a resident of the United States for over 30 years. She’s an enthusiastic lover of the Great American Songbook, with a preference for singing and recording the works of the masters such as Cole Porter and others, as well as foreign-born composers, such as Brazilian Jobim,  whose work has entered the canon of American music.

Saegusa is passionate about music, which, she says, “has always been with me; I could not live my life without it.” She’d sung for her own pleasure for many years before turning to performing about seven years ago. Saegusa is partial to jazz interpretation, which allows her to “have fun and play with the lyric.”  Her style is uniquely he own, performing American standards through the lens of her Japanese sensibilities and experiences.
