Vocalist Vanessa Racci and pianist Robert Lamont present Harry Warren: From Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood on Monday, December 3 at 5:30 PM at Birdland Theater.
Warren, America’s greatest Italian-American composer of popular music, was born in Brooklyn as Salvatore Antonio Guaragna. He emerged from Tin Pan Alley to become a Hollywood hit-maker for four major Hollywood studios over his long career, winning three Academy Awards for Best Song. The duo will present story and song, including hits such as “Chattanooga Choo-Choo,” “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe,” “I Had the Craziest Dream,” “You’ll Never Know,” “The More I See You,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” “Forty Second Street,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and more.
The show is presented in partnership with the Tin Pan Alley American Popular Music Project, of which Lamont is a Board member and committee head. Jazz singer Racci is also an educator with a passion for the Great American Songbook and its cultural influence, especially reflecting her Italian roots.
In December 2019, Tin Pan Alley became an official New York City landmark with the designation of 47-55 West 28th Street by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission following years of advocacy by the Tin Pan Alley American Popular Music Project, which commemorates and invigorates a living legacy: the birthplace of American Popular Music and the modern music industry on West 28th Street in New York City.
