East Axis: Matthew Shipp, Scott Robinson, Gerald Cleaver, Kevin Ray: September 20, 2022
East Axis is the cumulative life experience of its members. East Axis is four men, of different styles and backgrounds, coming together to spontaneously make music that sounds like each of them, all of them, and none of them. The music is like a dream of many scenes, but one observed with precision and the deepest type of understanding. The sound of it is a running commentary on the intersection of experience and that dream; a map of places that these musicians are still trying to explore.

Pezzotti prompted longtime JLCO trumpeter/arranger Marcus Printup to comment: “Ashley Pezzotti is a ‘singer’s singer’. Not only does she deliver timeless melodies (standards and her original compositions), she has also mastered the art of ‘scat singing’ and can hold her own with any horn player.” Ashley will debut new music for this appearance, featuring original compositions inspired by the Great American Songbook. With her effortless vocal technique and remarkable stage presence, she performs rich interpretations of familiar songs and hidden gems.
Oran Etkin: Open Arms Project: September 22, 2022
With Open Arms Project, Etkin flipped the traditional record-then-tour model, taking time off during his tours to live with mbira masters in Zimbabwe, build collaborative projects with Roma musicians in Czech Republic and compose new music with artists in São Paulo and Paris. As the world closed down in 2020, Etkin began releasing singles and music videos of each of these Open Arms collaborations that he had recorded on-location before the closures. Now as the world opens up, Etkin presents a new live show, in which he and his band deconstruct and recompose fresh music based on the melodies, rhythms and motifs that he recorded around the world. The live band is enhanced with electronics as the musicians improvisationally trigger samples of stems from the original recordings creating new textures and grooves. Imagine hand-clapping from Zimbabwe, a string instrument from Turkey and two flutes from Brazil all layered on top of each other, triggered in and out spontaneously, with the band improvising in dialogue with the electronics. This combination of deeply traditional sounds with forward-looking improvisations tells the story of an opening and connected world, rooted in its cultures, yet intent on forging a fresh path forward. For this concert, Etkin’s Open Arms band will also be joined on some selections by a long-time collaborator of Etkin’s, Grammy nominated Gnawa musician Samir Langus. Gnawa is the ritual trance tradition of Morocco’s black communities originally descendant from slaves and prisoners brought to Morocco from Mali and Mauritania. Etkin and Langus blend the earthy sounds of the Sintir and Bass-Clarinet in new and fresh ways that innovate yet honor this centuries old North-African tradition.

Of Fortner and Salvant’s 2019 Grammy Award–winning duet album, The Window, Variety says, “If there were such a thing as a Grammy for best jazz piano album, The Window should rightfully be up for that, too, because keyboardist Sullivan Fortner is an equal—and equally spectacular—partner through all 17 tracks, regardless of whether he gets cover billing.”
