Twenty years ago, on a clear Tuesday morning—September 11, 2001—the unthinkable happened as planes crashed into the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC and a field in rural Pennsylvania. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Ford’s Theatre Society will present a concert version of the musical Come From Away on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The Broadway cast and crew will be traveling to Washington for the show, which will be staged with partial props and costumes. The show will begin at 6 PM and run about 100 minutes. Tickets are not required.

Rain or shine, the event, on Friday, September 10, marks the theater’s return to live performances since shutting down for the pandemic. The performance also marks the opening up of the Capitol’s monuments after months of either pandemic or security-related shut-downs.

Come From Away tells the true story of a small town in Canada, where 38 planes carrying 7,000 passengers were ordered to land unexpectedly in the wake of the September 11 attack. The musical first premiered at Ford’s Theatre in 2016 before heading to Broadway, where it was nominated for seven Tony Awards in 2017. The concert version of the musical will be the first performed publicly for a live audience in the United States since March 2020. The Broadway is set to resume performances later in September.
