Barb Jungr and John McDaniel are reaching back into time with 1968-Let The Sun Shine In at 7 PM on Monday, October 22nd at Birdland.
Musician, writer, composer and lyricist Jungr and Grammy and two-time Emmy Award winning composer, arranger and Music Director, McDaniel, will present reinvent some of the most iconic anthems of 1968, when the Viet Nam War and its protestors clashed and raged, and the US saw the assassinations of both Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King. The repertoire of 1968 – Let The Sun Shine In reflects the tenor of the times with titles including “Born To Be Wild,” “Do You Know The Way To San Jose?” and “Aquarius.”
Jungr’s interpretive styleis a deconstruction/reconstruction of popular songs, with unusual musical arrangements allowing the listener new insights into familiar music. She has preciously interpreted the songbooks of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Jacques Brel, Nina Simone, Elvis Presley and more. In her 45-year recording career she has released 18 solo albums. Jungr and McDaniel’s collaboration has now produced two recordings. In 2011, Jungr received the New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Cabaret Vocalist, the Backstage Bistro Award for Best International Artist and Time Out New York’s #1 Top Live Cabaret Act for 2011.
McDaniel is a Broadway conductor, arranger and producer who has lent his talents to 10 Broadway shows, including Chicago, Annie Get Your Gun, Grease and Taboo. McDaniel has worked with stars including Patti LuPone, as her sole arranger for Patti LuPone on Broadway. He was the Music Director for the entire six-year run of “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” and conducted the band daily, working with such artists as Tony Bennett, Madonna, Neil Diamond, Chaka Khan, Liza Minnelli and Dick Van Dyke. McDaniel has been featured as a conductor with symphonies and philharmonic orchestras nationwide. His credits include arranging music for multiple Tony Awards presentations. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s Cabaret and Performance Conference.
