Broadway actress and singer, and longtime cabaret fan Ashley Wool presents The Broadway Era on Monday, July 28 at 7 PM at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Music director David John Madore is at the keys.
The show is an autobiographical piece about growing up autistic (undiagnosed until age 20) and finding community and expression through the arts, culminating in an unconventional journey to Broadway as one of the original cast members of How to Dance in Ohio. The Broadway Era also touches on the vulnerability that comes with being the “face of the franchise” of authentic autistic representation in the media—particularly during this political climate. It’s a personal story but also a universal reminder of the change and community that’s possible when we find the courage to live authentically and empower others to do the same.
Deep in denial and horrified of what the label of “autistic” would mean for her chances at an acting career—or any career, for that matter—Wool decided she could never talk about it publicly if she wanted to make it in showbiz. But when the pandemic hit—and suddenly there was no showbiz—she began exploring and sharing the pieces of her identity that she had refused to acknowledge, and realized she had a lot more to say. Turns out, there were even bigger plans in store for her artistry and her advocacy once showbiz returned.
