Spirit Soiree, a smorgasbord of musical delights deriving from the imagination of vaudevillienne Artemisia LeFay, plays on Sunday, January 21 at 8 PM at the Back Room.
Carouse with ghosts, step back in time and enjoy the wide variety of singers, dancers, comedians, and vaudevillians highlighting LeFay’s musical creations. Performers are LeFay, Cassandra Rosebeetle, Curren deVico, Hannah Mount, Khullip Jeung, Larry Harris, Maggie McMuffin, Mark York, Mary Spencer Knapp, Quintin Harris and Renee Guerrero.
Spirit Soiree celebrates LeFay’s upcoming album of original dark kabarett music (and 27th year on this side of the veil), in the guise of a vintage-inspired variety show, at none other than an authentic historical 1930s speakeasy. These past few years, she’s been hard at work meeting with the “spirits of a singers past” to compose the music that she feels is necessary for today’s mal du siècle—songs infused with the pathos and humor that went hand in hand with the performer’s obligation to both criticize and celebrate the zeitgeist.
Curious about what to expect? Here is one of Artemisia LeFay’s compositions, “Coffin Built For Two.”
