Husband and wife songwriting and cabaret duo David Alpher (composer/pianist) and Jennie Litt (lyricist/singer) chase the ghosts of the Viennese waltz through the popular music of the 20th and 21st centuries in their new cabaret show, Alpher & Litt In 3: Our Love Affair With The Waltz. The show makes its NYC debut in The Brick Room at Don’t Tell Mama on Friday, March 16, at 7 p.m., with an encore performance on Sunday, March 18, at 4 p.m.
The sweeping, grand melodies of the Viennese waltz became popular in the 1880s, with Johann Strauss II, known as “The Waltz King,” composing now classics such as “The Blue Danube,” “Tales from the Vienna Woods” and “The Emperor Waltz.” The waltz dominated the elegant, imperial ballrooms of Europe, yet was rooted in popular folk-dance––the Austrian “Ländler.” Alpher & Litt explore the many musical applications of waltz time, especially in the love songs of the 20th century. Alpher & Litt in 3 celebrates romance, times gone by and even 3/4 time itself. The show is directed by Eric Michael Gillett.
