In the wake of George Floyd’s killing, theater makers are moving swiftly to address police brutality and systematic racism. Brian Moreland and Arvind Ethan David have thus created the live online #WhileWeBreathe: A Night of Creative Protest, to benefit organizations committed to social justice. The show, on Wednesday, July 29, at 9 pm ET, will premiere short works written and directed by people of color, featuring performances by Lynn Whitfield (Greenleaf), Vanessa Bell Calloway (Coming to America), Breat (Hamilton), and Ty Jones (The Great Society), among others.
Moreland and David’s mission is to focus on how the theater community can work to produce impactful stories that will help fight racism at its core. #WhileWeBreathe is also raising funds for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Bail Project and other organizations. The creators hope to align the project to a long-term path with intent to continue to seize the window of opportunity to transcend a moment in time. The goal is to become an ongoing initiative toward meaningful, systemic change.
#WhileWeBreathe: A Night of Creative Protest streams on Wednesday, July 29, at 9 p.m. ET on WhileWeBreathe.com and YouTube Live.
