MAC Award winner and 2024 Female Vocalist nominee Goldie Dver sings Anthony Newley in What a Man! on Sunday, October 6 and Friday, November 1, both at 7:00 PM at Don’t Tell Mama. Music director-pianist-arranger is Don Pardo, with bassist John Miller and drummer Chip Fabrizi. Movement is by Ann Cooley and direction by James Beaman.
In What a Man! Goldie Dver pays tribute to the actor, singer, composer-lyricist, icon and personal friend. She relates her treasured stories of the friendship she and her late husband Paul Dver shared with “Tony,” as she puts her stamp on the Newley repertoire, from his chart topping hits of the ‘60s, such as “Personality” and “Pop Goes the Weasel,” to his Broadway and film collaborations with Leslie Bricusse, including “Who Can I Turn To?” “Feeling Good,” “The Joker” and “Cheer Up, Charlie” as well as stunning, lesser-known gems.
According to Dver, Newley’s songs are theatre songs, taking her back to her roots as an actress through the lens of a cabaret artist. To that end, Dver has had an extensive performing career in nightclubs in New York and across the US. Her debut CD, Sweet Beginning, is currently available on the Original Cast Records label at Footlight.com, and features the single, “I’ve Still Got New York” by Bill Zeffiro. Dver’s, company, KouchKids Productions, made a music video of it during the pandemic.
She also hosted the star-studded benefit The Season: Straight Up With a Twist! at Don’t Tell Mama, which doubled its fundraising goal for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2023, and which returns for two nights this December. In addition, Dver hosts the brand new monthly series, Sneak Peek, a performer and songwriter lab, which features new works in development in the cabaret and theatre communities.
