The Green Room 42 presents Vivian Reed in a centennial tribute to entertainment icon Lena Horne, on Saturday, June 30 at 7:00 PM, on what would have been Horne’s 101st birthday. Reed, the two-time Tony Award-nominated, multi-award winning Broadway star and concert artist will offer renditions of Horne classics such as “Stormy Weather,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” “A Fine Romance,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to His Face” and “On A Wonderful Day Like Today.” She is accompanied by a quartet featuring Conductor William Foster McDaniel on piano, Calvin Jones on bass, Damon DueWhite on drums and Don Tipton on guitar.
The evening honoring Lena Horne debuted earlier this season to positive critical reviews. Reed’s recent album “Standards and More” includes arrangements of standards by Billy Strayhorn (“Take the A Train”), Rodgers & Hart (“My Funny Valentine”) and Cole Porter (“Just One of Those Things”) in a blend of pop, jazz, soul and R&B. Recent concert appearances have included the Edith Piaf Centennial Celebration at Town Hall with the American Pops Orchestra, The Mabel Mercer Foundation Cabaret Convention, Broadway Unplugged and the National Black Theatre Festival. Reed has not only earned two Tony Award nominations, but also the Drama Desk Award, Theatre World Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, the NAACP Award and several others. She was originally seen on Broadway in Bubbling Brown Sugar, subsequently starring in the show in Los Angeles and leading the world tour through England, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Italy, France and beyond. Reed then went on to a career on television and on the stage, as well as developing her cabaret and concert stage singing.
