Jazz singer Vanessa Racci will perform her album release show, Jazzy Italian, on Sunday, October 23 at 5:30 PM at Birdland Jazz Club. Pianist/arrangers Steven Feifke and Glafkos Kontemeniotis provide accompaniment.
Jazzy Italian is also the name of Racci’s second album, her ZOHO label debut. The singer revisits songs associated with many of the Italians and Italian-Americans who have left their mark on jazz from its inception through to modern day, including “At the Jazz Band Ball,” one of Nick LaRocca and the Original Dixieland Jass Band’s first set of compositions from 1917. Also featured is the Oscar-winning standard “Moon River,” composed by another son of Italian immigrants, Enrico Nicola Mancini, better known as Henry Mancini.
Also included are “Coquette,” a 1928 Guy Lombardo hit, coauthored by his brother Carmen, clarinetist Leon Roppolo’s 1923 smash “Tin Roof Blues” and many more, not forgetting the many contributions of Italian-American, Frank Sinatra.
