Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club continues with performances for November, beginning on Tuesday, Novermber 2 at 7 PM with NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson’s 95th birthday celebration, featuring Akiko Tsuruga, Fukushi Tainaka, Champian Fulton, Zaid Nasser, Charlie Sigler and special guests.The full Dizzy’s lineup is:
Lou Donaldson’s 95th Birthday Celebration – November 2 | 7:00 p.m.
NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson has been one of the most respected names in jazz since the 1950s, when he worked with artists like Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk. With a huge tone and soul-influenced style that combines straight-ahead jazz, blues, bebop, and soul music, he calls his groove-laden style “soul sax.” While Sweet Poppa Lou will be enjoying the evening’s set from a front-row seat in the audience, his soulful vibe will surely infuse the playing of Akiko Tsuruga, Fukushi Tainaka, Champian Fulton, Charlie Sigler, Zaid Nasser and surprise special guests as they salute him on his milestone 95th birthday. The Trio featuring Ted Nash, Steve Cardenas, and Ben Allison – November 3 | 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
Born in Los Angeles into a musical family (his father, Dick Nash, and uncle, the late Ted Nash, were both well-known jazz and studio musicians), Nash has that uncanny ability to mix freedom with substance, blues with intellect, and risk-taking with clarity. He is a co-founder of the New York-based Jazz Composers Collective, a musician-run, non-profit innovative entity dedicated to presenting the original works of composers pushing the boundaries of their self-expression. Nash is also a long-standing member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. This intimate performance features his working trio—Steve Cardenas on guitar and Ben Allison on bass.
Stéphane Wrembel’s “Django New Orleans” with Special Guests Bria Skonberg and Daisy Castro – November 4-7 | 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
Making his Dizzy’s Club debut, the French-born, acoustic guitar phenom Stéphane Wrembel is known as one of the foremost masters and global emissaries of Django Reinhardt’s music. The producer of the annual sell-out “Django A Go-Go” at Town Hall and Carnegie Hall, Wrembel’s brand new project—a bold, energetic meeting between two old and eternal jazz traditions—will feature the lyrical trumpeter/vocalist Bria Skonberg, the virtuosic violinist Daisy Castro and a handful of New Orleans and New York-based musicians.
Gilad Hekselman Trio, Israeli Jazz Celebration – November 10 | 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
Gilad Hekselman, a winner of the Rising Star Guitarist category in Downbeat magazine’s Critics Poll, has released nine records as a bandleader. He tours the world extensively with his band and has performed as a sideman with artists such as Ben Wendel, Eric Harland, Ari Hoenig, Esperanza Spalding, Mark Turner, Aaron Parks, Anat Cohen, and many others. For these special Israeli Jazz Celebration performances, Gilad will demonstrate why he is one of the most influential voices in modern jazz guitar. Presented in collaboration with the Israel’s Office of Cultural Affairs in North America.
Warren Wolf and the History of the Vibes – November 11-14 | 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
Warren Wolf is a leading voice on the vibraphone and a protégé of all-time great vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. A member of the elite SFJAZZ Collective and Christian McBride’s Inside Straight, Warren also leads his own group that’s steeped in the traditions of straight-ahead jazz and bop. This show’s tribute to the history of the vibraphone features an a-list band with Leo Genovese on piano, Richie Goods on bass, and Eric Harland on drums.
Young Stars of Jazz featuring Isaiah J. Thompson, Endea Owens, Kyle Poole, Julian Lee, Zoe Obadia and Anthony Hervey – November 19 | 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
Supporting the next generation of jazz stars is one of the most exciting and important aspects of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s work. This collective of up-and-coming talents includes pianist and Steinway artist Isaiah J. Thompson; bassist Endea Owens, a member of the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” house band, Stay Human; and others who are taking the jazz scene by storm.
Riley Mulherkar Septet – November 20-21 | 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
This show is led by trumpeter, composer, and esteemed bandleader Riley Mulherkar. He has led a number of outstanding events at Jazz at Lincoln Center, including a Dizzy Gillespie career retrospective; headlined performances with vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Diane Schuur in the Appel Room; and been featured in swinging Mardi Gras celebrations and Red Hot Holidays concerts. For these special evenings at Dizzy’s Club, Riley will explore Wynton Marsalis’s vast repertoire with his septet, celebrating the maestro’s 60th birthday.
Wycliffe Gordon and The International All-Stars – November 24-28 | 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
Universally beloved trombone master Wycliffe Gordon—a former star of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet—continues a Jazz at Lincoln Center holiday tradition. He kicks off the holiday season with a five-night stay at Dizzy’s Club and a special performance on Thanksgiving. Wycliffe Gordon is the definition of a good time; as Wynton Marsalis says, “Just his presence is a creative experience.
