By Maryann Lopinto***The latest edition of the award-winning Sondheim Unplugged featured a cast of power-ladies, not lunching, but singing at 54 Below. The long-running series first began in 2010, created by Phil Geoffrey Bond, at Don’t Tell Mama, moved to The Laurie Beechman Theatre and finally took up residence here, with current host, Rob Maitner, who provided fun facts and tidbits about the original Broadway productions. Music director John Fischer manned the piano with expert gusto.

Performing on this ladies night—all wearing red (a birthday tribute)—were seven talented, knockout singers. Naturally, Maitner opened the show with “Beautiful Girls,” the opening number from Follies. Here’s a rundown of the numbers each delivered throughout this special evening:

Tony Award® winner, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Nikki M. James: “What More Do I Need?” and “Losing My Mind;” Soara-Joye Ross: “Take Me to the World” and “Send In the Clowns;” Ta’Nika Gibson; “On the Steps of the Palace” and “The Glamorous Life;” Alena Watters: “The Last Midnight” and “Could I Leave You?” Ramona Mallory: “In Buddy’s Eyes” and “The Ladies Who Lunch;” Kelli Rabke: “Broadway Baby” and ” “Not A Day Goes By” and Karen Mason: “Loving You” and show closer, a dynamic, heartfelt “I’m Still Here.”

The next Sondheim Unplugged is scheduled for Sunday, June 29. For more information, visit 54below.org
