The American Songbook Association‘s first annual gala, The Joint Is Jumpin’!, A Celebration of America’s Black Songwriters and Singers, on September 17th, swung the stage of the Irene Diamond Theater at the Pershing Square Signature Center with plenty of magic and memorable moments musical and otherwise. Declared a rousing success by audience members who mingled at the post-show reception, the event honored American songbook contributors of color as well as bestowing the first annual ASA Achievement Award to singer Marilyn Maye. Presenting the award to Maye was her longtime friend, legendary fashion designer, Bob Mackie.
Hosted by Todd Murray, performers who graced the stage with their tremendous talents were Danny Bacher, Aaron Lee Battle, Natalie Douglas, Cady Huffman, N’Kenge, Nicolas King, Joel A. Martin, Ken Page, Vivian Reed, Kissy Simmons, Stacy Sullivan. Music Directors were Eugene Gwozdz, Jon Weber and Tedd Firth. The event also featured drummer Mark McLean and bass player, Phil Palombi.
The American Songbook Association Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit incorporated in New York State, seeks to preserve, promote and advance the legacy of American popular music, the Great American Songbook (classic and new), and the unique art form of cabaret.
