The Harry Allen Quartet will appear in Birdland Theater from Friday through Sunday, January 5-7 with shows at 7 and 9:30 PM. Personel are John DiMartino on piano, Mike Karn on bass and Aaron Kimmel on drums in addition to saxophonist Allen.
In 2020, Allen was inducted into the Jazz Monsters Hall of Fame at SOKA University of America and was a top-three finalist for France’s Acadamie du Jazz’s Prix du Jazz Classique for his CD, Under a Blanket of Blue, with guitarist Dave Blenkhorn. Not only was this CD recorded remotely during the pandemic, but also mixed and mastered by Allen.
He has recorded over 70 CDs as a leader and many more as a sideman. His recordings and live performances have won multiple awards and he’s also performed at jazz festivals and clubs worldwide, frequently touring the United States, Europe and Asia. Among the entertainets and musicians he’s worked with are Rosemary Clooney, Jay Geils, Ray Brown, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Scott Hamilton, Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Kenny Burrell, John Pizzarelli and Bucky Pizzarelli. Allen has recorded with Tony Bennett, Johnny Mandel, Ray Brown, Tommy Flanagan, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Kenny Barron and Dave McKenna, among others.
