The Archive of Contemporary Music, a nonprofit at 54 White Street in TriBeCa that houses one of the world’s largest collections of popular music was close to going extinct. With rising rent, the Archive couldn’t keep up and was thousands of dollars in debt. But a call for help by Bob George, founder of the Archive, which contains more than three million recordings, music books, vintage memorabilia and press kits brought salvation.
Those who became aware of George’s plight responded with donations, which will keep the Archive solvent through the next year, and options for space. The Archive’s board decided on two possible new locations, one in upstate New York, near Hyde Park and a space in Los Angeles. Further, the Archive will give up its current lease by early summer.
Here’s where you come in: on Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, volunteers can help George and Archive workers to help organize inventory. “We’re calling it record-savings time,” George said. “We’ve got about a million 45s to sort.”
