Lehrer was a musician, singer-songwriter, satirist, and mathematician, and a child prodigy who entered Harvard College at the age of 15. He taught mathematics and musical theater at institutions including MIT, Harvard, Wellesley and the University of California, Santa Cruz, but his musical career was relatively brief. Lehrer recorded humorous, and often political songs that parodied popular musical forms. Among his output was “The Elements,” setting the periodic table to the tune of “Major-General’s Song” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. Early works included black humor songs such as “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park,” while his later output addressed timely social and political issues such as education (“New Math”), the Second Vatican Council (“The Vatican Rag”), and nuclear proliferation in “Who’s Next? In October 2020, Lehrer transfered the music and lyrics for all his songs into the public domain.
