Sue’s Muse: An Interview with Ethan Mathias

This young man is a phenomenon and a joy to know. I do not usually start out with a review quote but NLE’s very own Marilyn Lester said: Think of Lee Roy Reams, or Nathan Lane or Joel Grey. Now think of them at age 16. There you have Ethan Mathias, a star-in-the-making!”

High praise indeed. Big shoes to fill and well deserved. The only thing I think I would add is that he already is a star. Does he have a lot to learn? He’s 16, of course he does, but he’s doing the work, and man is he good no matter what his age! He currently is in a pre-college-level performance course at the Manhattan School of Music, and he’s under the watchful eye of a lot of people who all want him to succeed, myself included. He also has a very mature, pure baritone that is not all that common in someone his age, so there’s always this wonderful disconnect when he first starts to sing and we hear that voice—and trying to reconcile that voice with his sweet face.

He was one of 12 singers (out of 48 applicants) selected to sing in Broadway legend Adam Guettel’s Master Class AND when spotted by his now director, Lennie Watts, he was invited to sing the role of Peter in Singnasium’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar…he killed it! He is performing a special one night only encore of his solo cabaret show at Don’t Tell Mama on November 23rd (see flier and ticket link below.)

I am so happy to introduce you to Ethan Mathias…remember this name!
