Sue’s Muse: An Interview with Comic Kevin Dombrowski

“Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone, a comedy tonight!” So goes the lyric to “Comedy Tonight” from A Funny Thing happened on the Way to the Forum.

So a friend and I, as part of a bucket list adventure, decided to take a stand up comedy class. It was AMAZING! It was fun, hard, scary BUT…it was also (incredible to me) very challenging intellectually thanks to this amazing man, stand up, actor and teacher. Like most really good comics, he took a writer’s approach to all things stand up which I found fascinating. He was a direct but kind teacher. He constantly encouraged us to think outside the box and to go deeper, smarter and cleaner (meaning concise not as in dirty vs. clean bits).  The goal in four weeks was to create a five- minute set in anticipation of making our stand up debut at a major comedy club’s ppen mic.

As in any class, there were varying levels of funny, dirty, odd, and levels of performance comfort as well as an array of ages. He worked with each person on whatever level they walked in with, and in relation to how jokes would “play” for us (or not!)

I just want to say to anyone in our world wanting to create an introductory, stand up-level funny patter run, you may want to consider taking this class. I ended up with a lot of finely-tuned material that I will absolutely be using in future shows.

There’s a link to his future class below. The new session starts SOON…November 3-24 so sign up TODAY! In the meanwhile, please meet the delightful Kevin Dombrowski.
