Sally Darling Goes Totally Noel at Don’t Tell Mama, October 14 & 16

~ by Penny Landau

Sally Darling first became acquainted with Noel Coward in the 1970s, when she created the revue, Noel and Cole. In researching the show, she began to appreciate the complexity and artistry of Mr. Coward. In subsequent delving for revues and then for her initial cabaret shows, she realized how much she was learning from him; his music, his lyrics, his letters, the praise of him by those who knew him and particularly his diaries, have strongly influenced Sally’s growth as an artist and as a person. Her desire to share her admiration of the man is reflected in her new show, Totally Noel With a Little Bit of Sally, with performances at Don’t Tell Mama. Sally’s varied career has revolved around her voice; radio announcer, voice overs, ads, film dubbing. She has shaped her voice to the role, from cartoon cows to the Countess Rostova in War and Peace, Anna in The King and I, to Carrie in Carousel, from character roles in Gilbert and Sullivan to characters in over 250 books narrated for The Library of Congress and for Recorded Books.

Sally’s background in theatre and related areas is rich and varied; actress, director, coach, narrator, cabaret performer. Her first professional role was Anna in The King and I with Leonard Graves (Yul Brynner’s understudy, who played the King over a thousand times on Broadway). She has since performed with Barry Manilow, James MacArthur, David Carradine, Katharine Houghton, Sarah Rice and Hal Linden. She has staged operas, narrated with symphony orchestras and directed everything from Thurber to Shakespeare. In the ’70’s, she created and staged three revues of the music of Noël Coward and Cole Porter, then created a fourth for the Theater Guild, which she tailored for Patricia Morison, Larry Kert, Dick Shawn and Tony Tanner. As a narrator for The Talking Book program of The Library of Congress and for Recorded Books, Sally has over 250 fiction and non-fiction books on tape, including To Kill a Mockingbird for Recorded Books, for which she was chosen from over more than 100 applicants. She has won awards for her compelling voice and her unmatched interpretive skills.
