Ruth Carlin returns with “A Light in the Window – Songs of Judy Collins”

Article: Nite Life Exchange ~

Singer/songwriter Ruth Carlin is bringing back her critically acclaimed show, “A Light in the Window – Songs of Judy Collins,” to the world-renowned Metropolitan Room on Thursday, July 14th  @ 7pm. The show is directed by Scott Barnes, with Carlin’s Musical Director Paul Greenwood on piano, Dick Sarpola on bass and John Redsecker on drums.

Kevin Scott Hall named it one of the top ten cabaret shows of 2015, saying: “It took a poet like Carlin to bring the songbird’s decades of exquisite taste in music to full flower. Carlin captured the beauty of the words and music and, in between, charmed the audience with her unpretentious, humorous patter.”

Ruth Carlin premiered her critically acclaimed show at the Laurie Beechman Theatre last year, and then reprised it at The Duplex, Don’t Tell Mama, and the Metropolitan Room. Carlin brings this illuminating exploration of the eclectic anthology of songs sung by Judy back to the cabaret mecca, Metropolitan Room. She touches on Ms. Collins’ 50-year career spanning her early days in the ‘60s, her embrace of the Great American Songbook, musical theater and pop music.

The show includes songs written by:

Joni Mitchell  – “Carlin sang [Both Sides Now] tenderly and meaningfully, making you think you had never heard all those great lyrics ever before.” Joe Regan Jr., Theater Pizzazz!

Stephen Sondheim  – “She breathed fresh air into Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns.”  Danielle Miceli, NY Cabaret Today

Richard Farina – “[In] Pack Up Your Sorrows, her performance was unimpeachable.” Roy Sander, Bistro Awards

Along with other songwriters, Ms. Carlin will sing four songs written by Judy Collins herself – “The Blizzard is a striking rarity and Carlin’s interpretation was a revelation of despair and hope.” Joe Regan Jr., Theater Pizzazz!. Rarely covered, these songs reveal another facet of this musical legend.

In 2013, Carlin released her debut CD, Moon Song, which includes several of her own compositions. Her previous shows included Carlin originals, as well as music by many of our greatest songwriters.

“She has a sincerity that can’t be manufactured, intelligence, and a fascinating voice,” wrote Kevin Scott Hall of Bistro Awards. “The CD is a lovely, magical showcase for Ruth Carlin’s talent.”

Music director Paul Greenwood is a sought after pianist, arranger, and singer who has accompanied countless performers including George Burns, Elly Stone, Jane Olivor, Art Garfunkel, Ann Hampton Callaway, Loni Ackerman, Anita Gillette, Penny Fuller, Nancy LaMott, and Sylvia McNair. Paul is a recipient of the Backstage Magazine Bistro Award, the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) Award, and the Leonardo DaVinci Award given by the Beaux Arts Society.

Director Scott Barnes has created acts for award-winning singers Bette Midler, Rita Moreno, Kathie Lee Gifford, Barbara Brussell, Marianne Challis, and Alix Korey, and for five years directed, publicized and managed the career of the late, legendary Nancy LaMott, hailed by New York Magazine as “the best cabaret singer in New York.” He received the 1994 and 1996 MAC Awards for Best Director.

Bassist Dick Sarpola and drummer John Redsecker are currently playing in the orchestra of the Broadway hit Aladdin.
