Rock ‘n Roll Star Gary U.S. Bonds Returns to the Iridium on Saturday, March 22

Enduring singer-songwriter Gary U.S. Bonds returns to the Iridium on Saturday, March 22 at 8:30 PM. Bonds came roaring out of Norfolk, Virginia in 1960 as Gary Anderson with the hit, “New Orleans.” Promotional copies were distributed in sleeves inscribed “Buy U.S. Bonds—and so at age 19, Gary Anderson became Gary U.S. Bonds.

The follow-up was the “party” record, “Quarter to Three,” a number one hit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame lists as one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Over the next three years, Bonds co-wrote and recorded hit after good-time hit: ”School Is Out,” “School Is In,” “Dear Lady Twist,” “Twist, Twist Senora,” “Seven Day Weekend” and others. He performed throughout the world, headlining above a group of relative newcomers in 1963… The Beatles.

His success as a songwriter goes beyond his own Rock ‘n Roll and R&B hits. He has also garnered a nomination for the Country Music Association’s “Songwriter of the Year” for Johnny Paycheck’s “Friend Don’t Take Her, She’s All I’ve Got.” He is an honoree of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, an inductee of The Long Island Music Hall of Fame and a “favorite son” of the Blues Brothers.
